How to Treat Migraine Headaches Naturally With Ayurveda

Ayurveda approaches migraine also known as ardhavabhedaka, by identifying the underlying dosha imbalance, most often Vata Pitta, and correcting it through therapies such as Shirodhara, Nasya and Thalapothichil, supported by herbal medicines, diet correction and sleep regulation. Treatment is individualised after a physician consultation and usually runs across 7–21 days, depending on how frequent and severe the episodes are.

What Ayurveda says about migraine

A migraine is different from a standard headache. It can last anywhere from 4 hours to 3 days, is typically one sided, and can be accompanied by nausea and vomiting.

Classical Ayurvedic texts describe this as ardhavabhedaka (or half-head splitting pain). The condition is read through the doshas:

  • A migraine patterned after Vata is characterized by sharp, shifting pains, and is connected to irregularity in eating, sleeping and traveling.
  • A migraine patterned after Pitta is characterized by a burning pain behind the eyes, and is made worse by heat, bright light, spicy and acidic food, and caffeine. This is generally prevalent in UAE’s summer months.
  • A Kapha migraine is characterized by a dull, heavy pain, and is generally made worse by congestion and thick, humid weather. This is generally prevalent in autumn.

Because the dominant dosha changes from person to person, two people who have the same symptoms may receive completely different treatment plans. Thus, Ayurvedic migraine care is generally done after consulting a doctor rather than following a set treatment plan.

Ayurvedic Therapies used in Migraine Management

These are head-and-neck focused treatments, delivered under a physician’s supervision. A plan may combine two or three of them.

  • Shirodhara: Warm medicated oil or herbal decoction is poured over the forehead for 30-45 minutes. This therapy is most associated with migraine care and is usually scheduled across 7-14 sessions.
  • Nasya: An herbal or medicated oil preparation is administered through the nostrils. Ayurveda considers the nose the direct route to the head, therefore Nasya is used to treat conditions that affect the sinuses, eyestrain and forehead heaviness.
  • Thalapothichil: A herbal paste applied over the scalp and held in place for 30–45 minutes. Often chosen for Pitta-type migraine with burning pain and disturbed sleep.
  • Shirolepa and Shiro Pichu: A medicated paste or an oil-soaked cotton pad placed on the crown, used in shorter supporting sessions.
  • Internal medicines: Oral decoctions and formulations for issues related to digestion, sleep and stress, which are treated as part of the problem rather than separate from it.
  • Panchakarma: if advised. In case of recurrent and/or chronic migraine, the physician may suggest a staged cleansing program, beginning with virechana, to be followed with other shiro-head therapiesIt is based on the assessment. Variation in individual response is observed with Ayurvedic therapies and no Ayurvedic therapy must be initiated based on self diagnosis.

Herbs commonly used in Ayurvedic Migraine Care

  • Brahmi: used in formulations addressing mental strain and sleep quality.
  • Ashwagandha: used where stress and fatigue are part of the trigger pattern.
  • Shankhpushpi: traditionally used in preparations for the head and nervous system.
  • Jatamansi: used in Pitta-type presentations with irritability and disturbed sleep.
  • Ginger and coriander: common dietary supports for digestion and for Pitta aggravation.

Daily routine and diet that reduce trigger load

Most of the long-term benefits of Ayurveda are found in dinacharya (the Ayurvedic daily routine), and it’s free!

  • Try to keep your sleep and waking times consistent, even on the weekends.
  • Don’t skip meals and try to eat your main meal at noon.
  • Decrease your intake of caffeine, aged cheeses, alcohol, fermented foods, chocolate, and processed meats, and see how you feel. Then, reintroduce one at a time and see if it’s a trigger.
  • Stay hydrated, limit your midday sun exposure and avoid dehydration and heat exhaustion (in the UAE, especially in the summer, these can be common migraine triggers)
  • Take a short break every 45 minutes if you’re doing a lot of computer work.
  • Take nasal/scalp oil if your doctor prescribed it.
  • Keep a simple migraine trigger diary for one month. Bring it to your appointment.

When to see a doctor straight away

Ayurvedic treatment does not exclude conventional treatment. If you have the type of headache described below, go to the emergency room immediately.

  • Headache of a sudden, severe nature that is different from any you may have experienced before
  • Follows a head injury
  • Comes on with a fever
  • Is accompanied by neck stiffness
  • Is accompanied by confusion or weakness
  • Is accompanied by loss of or altered vision
  • Is accompanied by change in speech
  • If you experience any of the above, do not call for Ayurvedic treatment.

If you are on any prescribed migraine medication, you may continue with it and inform your Ayurvedic physician about it. Do not modify or stop your prescribed medication without your prescribing physician’s approval.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can Ayurveda cure migraine permanently?

No treatment system, Ayurvedic or allopathic, is guaranteed to provide a permanent cure to migraine. Ayurveda aims at reducing the severity and frequency of migraine attacks by addressing the underlying reason for the imbalance in the Doshas and also address the root cause of the migraine. The result of this approach may vary from person to person.

How long does Ayurvedic migraine treatment take?

Ayurvedic migraine treatment is usually delivered over 7–21 days, with daily or alternate-day sessions. The exact duration is decided by the physician after assessment, based on episode frequency, severity and how long the condition has been present.

Is Shirodhara effective for migraine?

Shirodhara is one of the most frequently prescribed Ayurvedic therapies for migraine and tension headache. It involves pouring warm medicated oil over the forehead for 30–45 minutes and is typically given across 7–14 sessions as part of a wider plan, not on its own.

Can I take Ayurvedic medicine along with my migraine tablets?

You must let your Ayurvedic physician know about all medication you take, migraine medicine for example, before starting treatment. Some herbs interact with conventional drugs. Therefore do not stop any of your prescribed medication without consulting the doctor that prescribed it.
