Treat Piles through Kottakkal Ayurveda

One such condition that patients often felt embarrassed to talk about, but is really common, is piles (arsha in Ayurveda, and commonly known as haemorrhoids). In simple terms, they occur when the veins in and around the anal canal swell or become inflamed, causing pain, discomfort, or bleeding. Something to know up front: everyone is born with haemorrhoidal tissue, and at a normal baseline it causes no trouble whatsoever. Symptoms only occur when these veins become abnormally large and swollen.

Who Is Most Likely to Develop Piles?

There are always some things that increase risk in my patients. The ones I see most often contributing to the problem are being overweight or obese, pregnancy, a low-fiber diet, chronic constipation or diarrhoea, regularly lifting heavy objects, spending extended time sitting on the toilet and straining during bowel movements.

Types of haemorrhoids

The type depends on where the swollen vein is and each type works a little differently.
External haemorrhoids are found just under the skin around the anus. These can be itchy, painful and sometimes bleed. -Sometimes they can pool and clot with blood which is not dangerous but can cause noticeable pain and swelling.
Instead, internal haemorrhoids develop inside the rectum. They may bleed, but it is curious because they are usually not painful and for that reason many patients do not even know they have them until they see the bleeding.
Prolapsed haemorrhoids are a type of internal or external haemorrhoids that protrude or bulge out of the anus. They can bleed, and hurt, and are generally more obvious and troublesome than the other types.
It’s also worth noting that haemorrhoids are different than anal fissures, because the symptoms – itching, pain, bleeding – do overlap. The difference is that haemorrhoids are swollen veins and a fissure is actually a tear in the lining of the anus. Both conditions are often caused by the same thing: putting too much pressure or strain on your lower body and belly.

What Actually Causes Piles to Form?

Increased pressure on the veins of the anus and rectum is the common denominator in most causes. This frequently occurs from pelvic pressure due to weight gain, especially during pregnancy, from straining with bowel movements due to constipation, or from straining while lifting heavy objects.

Identifying the Symptoms

Internal haemorrhoids are annoyingly silent – they seldom cause pain and are generally not felt unless they have prolapsed. If symptoms do occur, they are often manifested as blood on toilet paper, in the stool or in the toilet bowl, signs of rectal bleeding that are worth getting checked.
The external haemorrhoids are more prominent. Signs and symptoms of anal cancer include: Itchy anus Hard tender lumps near the anal opening Pain or aching especially when sitting Rectal bleeding

How to Prevent Piles – Diet and Habits

Many, many haemorrhoid cases are really about preventable habits and I spend a fair amount of time with patients talking about this. Here are some things that make a big difference:

  • Don’t sit long or push too hard on the toilet
  • Go to the toilet as soon as the urge strikes rather than putting off bowel movements
  • Drink lots of water during the day
  • Try to increase your fibre intake by eating more fresh fruits, vegetables and whole grains, or taking supplements if necessary – women should aim to eat around 25 grams of fibre each day and men around 35 grams
  • Keep moving. Physical activity really helps the bowels stay regular.
  • Laxatives or enemas should only be used as directed by a healthcare provider, as overuse can interfere with your body’s natural ability to regulate bowel movements.

Other General Lifestyle Changes That Help

Along with the specific prevention steps listed above, a few general lifestyle habits can go a long way in relief and prevention:

  • Eating healthy, nutritious food fresh
  • Eating on a strict diet schedule
  • Following a structured healthy eating plan
  • Getting enough water and fibre in your diet each day
  • Don’t eat too much at night
  • Sticking to a regular physical activity routine
  • Not holding back the urge to defecate
  • Stay away from alcohol and spicy foods that can make symptoms worse.
